Which other polymers does Bayer MaterialScience offer as an alternative to the thermoplastics?

Bayer MaterialScience produces polycarbonates, thermoplastic polyurethanes und polyurethanes.
This web site only covers the Bayer MaterialScience engineering thermoplastics product range in the form of granules. Other polymers, however, such as polyurethane (processed by polyaddition, combining two components) differ fundamentally in their processing method and thermal performance.
You can find a current overview of our products on following pages:
http://plastics.bayer.com
http://www.pc-films.com
http://tpe-u.com
http://www.pu.bayer.com
http://www.bayer-ls.com

In the course of the split of the former Bayer Polymers in Bayer Material Science and Lanxess, many earlier products from Bayer Polymers are now distributed by Lanxess.
Bayer MaterialScience does not offer technical service for Lanxess products.
Follwing link should help to find product data on Lanxess products via the Lanxess tech centers:

Do flame retardant plastics from Bayer MaterialScience contain PBB or PBDE?

No.
In common with other well-known German plastics manufacturers, we have not used any polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) or polybrominated biphenyls (PBBs) in the production of flame retardant plastics since 1989.

We hereby confirm that no:

PCBs (polychlorinated biphenyls)
PCTs (polychlorinated terphenyls)
PBBs (polybrominated biphenyls)
PBDEs (polybrominated diphenyl ethers)

are used in the production of the Bayer MaterialScience thermoplastics

Apec®, Bayblend® and Makrolon®,

and that to the best of our knowledge none of these substances can be present in the above products.

Do plastics from Bayer MaterialScience comply with the EU Scrap Vehicle guideline?

All the following Bayer MaterialScience plastics:

Apec®, Bayblend®, Makroblend® and Makrolon®

satisfy the requirements of the EU Scrap Vehicle guideline (2000/53/EG) .

These products comply with the bans and restrictions on the use of lead, cadmium, mercury and chromium (VI) set out in this guideline. Compounds of these elements are not used in the production of our thermoplastics.

Please find further information under EU - Certificates and Directives.

How can I get a Safety Data Sheet for a particular type of plastic?

You can find a Safety Data Sheet on a particular Bayer MaterialScience thermoplastic under the navigation "Product information / <Product> / Product datasheets".
Please note that you need to be registred to the TechAssistant to access the Material Safety Data Sheets!
Registration

If the requested Safety Data Sheet cannot be found there please contact us by giving

the full name of the product
the country in question
your full address with fax no. and your e-mail address

using our mail function.
Customers receive a current Safety Data Sheet with the first delivery or any change.

How can you recycle a Bayer MaterialScience plastic or dispose of the parts?

All Bayer MaterialScience thermoplastics are suitable for recycling. After appropriate reprocessing, sprues, production waste and used parts can be melted down and processed to form new parts. Product properties may change during processing, and it is therefore important to check to what extent your finished article specifications are met.
Our thermoplastics can be disposed of with household waste or incinerated in accordance with local official regulations.

Under what storage conditions do original packed Bayer MaterialScience plastics have to be stored?

Where can you find the fire performance requirements relating to Bayer MaterialScience thermoplastics for the construction sector?

All plastics are flammable, and fire safety requirements have to be taken into consideration in many fields of application.

Many influencing parameters determine the fire performance of a product, the spread of a fire and the extent of the damage in the event of a fire. These include:

Ignitability
Superficial fire propagation
Heat evolution
Dripping of flaming particles
Development of smoke gas

Please contact us if you have questions on this topic.

Where can you find the fire performance requirements, the test methods and standards relating to Bayer MaterialScience thermoplastics for the electrical and electronic sector?

The fire performance requirements and the safety-relevant regulations are designed to ensure that:

Fires are prevented from starting, e.g. by enforcing no-smoking bans.
Fire and smoke are prevented from spreading.
Effective firefighting and rescue operations are permitted.

Within the scope of normal regulations, these goals are intended to be achieved by compliance with certain tolerance limits.

Please contact us if you have questions on this topic.

Which grades of engineering thermoplastic are suitable for food contact applications?

Notes on which grades comply with EU Guideline 2002/72/EC, the BGVO (German regulation on articles for food contact applications), the BfR (German Federal Institute for Consumer Health and Veterinary Medicine) Recommendations and the FDA Regulations are contained in our Application Technology Information sheets (ATIs) for engineering thermoplastics and in the tables of guide values.

For advice on the wide range of colors available and the various demands placed on the pigments, contact us by e-mail.

Sales & Services
Can I order Bayer MaterialScience thermoplastics on-line (e-commerce)?

Companies who currently purchase BayerMaterialScience plastics through a BayerMaterialScience agency as a direct customer can order on-line the plastics (they have purchased previously) on this home page under BayerOne and track the status of the order.
You need to register, and this can also be done from the menu under BayerOne. When you receive the necessary data and passwords from our Account Manager dealing with your Company, orders can be placed and tracked online.

How can I get the address of a Bayer MaterialScience agency in a particular country?

If you click here you will get the Bayer MaterialScience contact for your area.

How do I get a plastic in a particular color?

Our plastics are also available colored depending on the minimum quantity purchased (varies according to the product). You can discuss this with the Bayer MaterialScience sales force or the staff at your LOCAL AGENCY.
An ideal sample for a color match is a plastic sheet approximately 30 x 30 mm with smooth/gloss surface in the color required. Sometimes information taken from a color register (RAL, NCS, Pantone, ...) is also suitable for a color match.
So-called screening can also be successful because there are often several hundred to over a thousand colors for our plastics. This means that of the colors available, one or more colors are identified as being similar to what the customer requires and shown to the customer.

Please find more information under:
http://www.competenceincolor.com/index.htm

Where can I get a quote (price, delivery time) for a particular product?

You can get a price quote from a Bayer MaterialScience plastics sales office covering your area (local agency) or for smaller quantities from a distributor.
The local agency in the particular country can give you the names of smaller distributors. Please specify the grade, color and quantity required.
(See also "Ordering on-line/e-commerce" under BayerOne for current Bayer MaterialScience plastics customers).

Which companies are Bayer MaterialScience partners as distributors for plastics?

Various companies act as distributors for Bayer MaterialScience thermoplastics in a number of countries. We therefore suggest contacting the relevant local agency and ask for a local source.

Which thermoplastics are transparent and where can you find optical properties for them?

Many Makrolon® and Apec® grades are available in transparent formulations.
Optical properties such as refractive index and degree of light transmission for the transparent grades are given in the product data sheets which you can find on this home page under 'Product information/ respective products/ product data sheets'.
