Part design:

Gliding silently along

The 27-meter-long excursion boats in Hamburg harbor have a very striking appearance. To save on expensive fuel and make use of renewable energies, they have been equipped with futuristic-looking roofs made up of solar modules. Passengers can then see through the modules and admire the city's sights without having to leave their seats.

A number of photovoltaic silicon solar cells are embedded between two sheets of Makrolon® , with a side length of 82 cm, to form solar modules. The Makrolon® sheet is UV-resistant as well as hail-proof and weatherproof. Its outstanding impact strength ensures a high level of protection against vandalism.

The flexibility of the Makrolon® sheet means that the segments can be readily joined together to form the 80 m² arched roof. The sun can thus shine predominantly vertically onto a large number of the solar cells, increasing the level of efficiency. Rainwater can also run off the roof. Even when the sky is overcast, the amount of energy recovered is sufficient to propel the boat.

The flexible modules took four years to develop. The dissimilar coefficients of expansion of the solar cells and the Makrolon® sheets constituted a particular challenge that had to be resolved by design measures.

The roofs bear the Makrolon® label as a quality seal.
