In the field of information technology, the
balanced property combination of flow ability, toughness, heat
resistance and flame retardance of Bayblend® FR
grades make them ideally suited to applications like computer,
monitor, laptop, printer or television housings and copy machines.
Current requirements of a large number of environmental labels and
EU directives as RoHS (Restriction of the Use of certain Hazardous
Substances in Electrical and Electronic Equipment) and WEEE (Waste
Electrical and Electronical Equipment) are fulfilled by the
Bayblend® FR grades.
With
effect from 2008, the flame retardance of televisions and IT
equipment will be assessed in the new ICE 62368 standard. This
standard will replace the current guidelines following a
transitional period. One aim of the new standard is to make
televisions and IT equipment more resistant to external sources of
ignition. This is because one fifth of all television fires are
caused by external fire sources, such as candles that have fallen
over. When the IEC 62368 standard is introduced for
television and IT equipment, it will no longer be possible to use
non flame-retardant thermoplastics. The RoHS and WEEE directives
make it more difficult to use flame-retardant grades whose current
flame retardance packages no longer comply with the two EU
directives. In contrast, Bayblend® FR is
equipped with effective antimony-free, chlorine-free and
bromine-free flame retardance packages and also offers outstanding
material properties such as good long-term thermal stability,
light stability and processability, for example. It is therefore
the material of choice for television cabinets.

Makrolon® grades
with antimony-, chlorine- and bromine-free flame retardants, which
comply with the current requirements of a large number of
environmental labels and EU directives are applied in transparent
and translucent
housings.
Makrolon® grades
as well as our Bayblend® FR grades are
especially successfully applied in flat screen TV sets oft leading
manufacturers.
For large size LCD TVs, the
image-generating liquid crystal display is illuminated from the
back by a backlight unit (BLU). Sheets and films made of
Makrolon® are feasible for the homogeneous
scattering from the light sources in the
BLU.
