Part design:

Eye and face protection

Day in, day out, our eyes and face are exposed to a greater danger in all areas of life than we are actually aware of.

When it comes to protective goggles, use is generally made of Makrolon® grades with the additional designation LQ (lens quality).

Why Makrolon® LQ?

Makrolon® LQ offers a high mechanical strength, is practically unbreakable and has good optical properties. Standard Makrolon® LQ grades have a water-white color.

Compared with the general-purpose Makrolon® grades, they offer a higher transmission (> 89 %, measured at 1 mm wall thickness) and a higher level of purity. All Makrolon® LQ grades incorporate UV protection in order to filter out most of the UV radiation that is harmful to the eyes up to 380 nm. Special purpose Makrolon® grades are available for 100 % UV protection (up to 400 nm).

Optimum protection is also available against critical danger sources:

The Bayer MaterialScience AG supplies a special IR absorber to provide protection during welding work. This will filter out either all or part of the infrared component of the no visible spectrum, depending on the amount added, thereby ensuring that the levels of protection specified in different standards are attained. Special protective spectacles for laser beams filter out the wavelength or wavelength range of the laser in question, either in its entirety or to the extent where the radiation concentration is such that the laser is just visible for adjustment purposes.

Since Makrolon® LQ is processed by injection molding by contrast to the case for the traditional materials employed to date there are no limits on design when it comes to the shape of spectacles or the lenses employed. Makrolon® spectacles are comfortable to wear, since they are half as heavy as glass.

A scratch-resistant coating is generally applied to the surface to provide protection against mechanical damage. Apart from this surface coating, other functional layers such as anti-fogging lacquers or metal layers can also be applied without any problems.
Another application, which is already widespread in the USA, is the use of Makrolon® LQ for corrective lenses.
