The American company, B. Braun Medical Inc., produces the SAFESITE needle-free injection system in transparent, lipid-resistant Makrolon® Rx1805 at low cost, employing the injection molding process. This product is eminently suited to the production of parts which come into direct contact with intravenously-administered fluids, and particularly lipid-containing emulsions.

For other applications, such as tube connectors, three-way taps, Luer fittings, injection adapters and additional components, this material is required to offer the following characteristics in addition to its high transparency:

> good stiffness, fracture resistance and toughness
> high heat resistance
> glue ability with the aid of appropriate adhesives
> high resistance to stress cracking, particularly with lipid-containing emulsions
> good resistance to chemicals
> resistance to gamma-ray sterilization – superheated steam sterilization at 121 °C or ethylene oxide sterilization are also possible.

Makrolon® Rx1805 also fulfils the specifications of ISO 10993-1 for tissue contact of up to 30 days.
