The Spiros inhalers from Dura Pharmaceuticals Inc. are of a lightweight, compact design. This has been achieved by using Makrolon^® 2558 for the thin-walled housing, along with its integrated functional elements, and also for the end cover and the drug cassette.

Makrolon^® 2558 also complies with the requirements of international biocompatibility standard ISO 10993-1, Part 1, for plastic parts that are in contact with body tissue or body fluids for up to 30 days.

The advantage of the compact, lightweight dosing unit is that it permits simple and rapid treatment of asthma and other respiratory tract diseases wherever the patient happens to be. An exchangeable cassette contains a total of 30 portions of active ingredient, and the transparent lid means that the patient can see at a glance just how many portions remain. Opening and closing the lid has the effect of pressing a dose of the powdered active ingredient into a hollow chamber. It is then finely dispersed inside this chamber by means of a battery-operated motor and transported right into the lungs during inhalation.
